1955 Mercedes 300SL

The car arrived pre-disassembled from R&R Automotive Restorations. Once it was back in our shop, we stripped off the remaining paint and removed some trim that was still in place. R&R had pre-marked several areas they wanted to see improved in terms of fitment. Based on those markings, we set about addressing those areas systematically. Refit all body panels Refit the bonnet Refit both gullwing doors Refit the engine lid We also received a beautiful star-pattern grill from Randy (owner of R&R Automotive Restorations), which was installed seamlessly. To handle the trim, we removed the spears, repaired any rust behind them, and then reinstalled them using lead. This particular car required very minimal metalwork. The aluminum doors were original and only needed refitting—no replacement or major repair was necessary. In the trunk panel, we found some rot underneath the felt pads, so we removed them and bead-rolled a new panel to match the original pattern before welding it in. The car was painted after everything was properly fitted. Before plating and chroming, we had to add aluminum to the doors to ensure consistent panel gaps. After paintwork was finished, the car was sent back to Randy at R&R for final assembly and drivetrain restoration.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198), produced from 1954 to 1963, is a legendary two-seat sports car known for its lightweight tubular-frame design. Based on the 1952 W194 race car, it featured a direct fuel-injected 3.0L straight-six engine, making it the fastest production car of its time at 260 km/h (162 mph). The "SL" stands for super-leicht ("super-light"), reflecting its racing roots. Introduced to the U.S. market at the suggestion of importer Max Hoffman, the 300 SL became an icon for its performance, innovation, and striking design—and remains one of the most coveted classic cars ever built.
