1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A
We received the car as a bare shell from R&R Automotive Restorations. Our first step was to assess which panels needed replacement. We ultimately replaced the longitudinals, rear tail skin, aboth sail panels nd several other components, some of which had to be temporarily removed and then refit. Fitting the split windshield and other early 356-specific components was particularly challenging, as it was our first time working with some of these parts. A large part of the process involved careful assessment of originality. To ensure the authenticity of the restoration, we brought in Dr. Brett Johnson—an expert in Porsche 356, 911, and 912 models, and the author of several Porsche authenticity guides. He reviewed the car and confirmed the quality and accuracy of the metalwork. Once all the panels were properly fitted, we completed the bodywork, primed and painted the shell, and then sent it back to R&R Automotive Restorations for drivetrain restoration and final assembly.
The 1951 Porsche 356 Pre-A, specifically the split-window coupe, is a highly sought-after classic car, known for its early production and unique design features. These early 356s, especially the split-window models, are considered some of the purest representations of Ferdinand Porsche's original design. The 1951 model year was characterized by a two-piece windshield, which is a key distinguishing feature of the "Pre-A" designation.
